Misophonia
Misophonia literally means “hatred of sounds” and is considered a sensorial processing disorder. It manifests as an abnormal reaction to selected sounds which cause an irrational response of annoyance, disgust and anger. Common bodily noises such as sniffing and chewing for an example may trigger the reaction. The offending sounds vary amongst individuals.
People affected by the condition tend to avoid the affecting sounds by using ear protection or moving away from the source which only aggravates the problem. The condition often leads to social isolation and family disharmony.
Misophonia may be an isolated condition but it is mostly associated with other psychological disorders such as anxiety and obsessive compulsive behaviour.
An audiological assessment will exclude the presence of any hearing disorder which is not part of the condition. Our audiologists are experienced in diagnosing and managing Misophonia.
